What should I tell my barber in order to get kickass indie hair?

I listen to tons of indie music and I've noticed that a lot of them have really cool hair and I've been needing a haircut so I figured why not get something new and awesome?

Right now my hair is black, shoulder length in the back, and kinda goes down to my mouth around the front and sides. It's really thick and has got really weird layers which I used to love, but have started to look misshapen and awkward lately.

Also, I can't find any pictures of hair I want so if you can recommend some good ones so I can take those as a reference, that would be great.
